Methodology & Sources

How MoneyPilot Canada calculates estimates—and where the assumptions come from.

Ontario take-home pay — 2026

The calculator uses 2026 federal and Ontario marginal brackets, the federal and Ontario basic personal amounts, the Canada Employment Amount, EI, CPP and CPP2 parameters, Ontario surtax, Ontario Health Premium and Ontario's tax-reduction formula.

For CPP tax treatment, the model separates base CPP from the enhanced contributions: base CPP is used for non-refundable tax credits, while first additional CPP and CPP2 are deducted from taxable income. RRSP, RPP/pension contributions and deductible union dues entered by the user are also modeled as deductions from taxable income.

CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator remains the appropriate reference for exact pay-period withholding.

Mortgage-rate comparison feed

MoneyPilot's lender comparison uses publicly available mortgage-rate comparison pages and direct lender verification links. The server checks rate sources automatically and caches results for six hours. When a source cannot be parsed, the page labels and uses a dated fallback snapshot rather than inventing a rate. Separately, the Bank of Canada benchmark is retrieved from Valet series V80691333, V80691334 and V80691335 for typical major-bank posted 1-, 3- and 5-year conventional mortgage rates.

Advertised, comparison and posted rates are not necessarily the lowest rate available to a specific borrower. Lenders may offer promotional, discretionary or negotiated rates based on underwriting, mortgage features and relationship pricing.

Mortgage insurance & stress test

For standard owner-occupied purchases with less than 20% down and a purchase price below $1.5 million, the calculator estimates a CMHC mortgage-insurance premium based on published loan-to-value premium schedules. For modeled 30-year insured amortizations, the calculator uses CMHC Home Start premium rates and requires the user to indicate applicable first-time-homebuyer/new-build eligibility.

The stress-test rate is the greater of the contract mortgage rate plus 2 percentage points or 5.25%. GDS uses qualifying principal-and-interest, property tax, heating and 50% of condo fees. TDS adds the user's other monthly debt obligations. The displayed 39% GDS and 44% TDS thresholds are CMHC reference maximums, not an approval decision.

Canadian mortgage payment math

Fixed-rate mortgage calculations use the Canadian convention of a nominal annual rate compounded semi-annually and convert that rate to the selected payment period. Insurance premium estimates are added to the financed mortgage when applicable. Provincial sales tax on mortgage-insurance premiums is not included.

Automatic official-news feed

V1.5.3 monitors dedicated Bank of Canada RSS feeds for upcoming releases, the Business Outlook Survey, Canadian Survey of Consumer Expectations, Financial Stability Report, Financial System Survey, Market Participants Survey, Monetary Policy Report and Summary of Governing Council deliberations. Senior Loan Officer Survey releases are captured through the Bank's upcoming-release feed. Department of Finance Canada and CRA feeds remain included. The personal-finance relevance filter is applied after collection.

The site retrieves recent items from official Bank of Canada RSS feeds and Government of Canada/CRA Atom feeds through a server-side endpoint. Before display, a finance-topic filter requires signals related to interest rates, inflation, taxes, housing, mortgages, banking, markets, investing, retirement benefits, employment or fiscal policy. This prevents most unrelated government announcements from appearing. MoneyPilot displays source titles, publication dates, topic labels and short source summaries with links back to the original publication. These automatic items are kept visually and editorially separate from MoneyPilot-written analysis.

Live Bitcoin spot price

The Bitcoin calculator requests the latest BTC-USD and BTC-CAD spot prices from Coinbase's public spot-price API through a MoneyPilot server-side endpoint. The current BTC input and the calculator's USD/CAD estimate are refreshed from those spot prices when available. Users can always override the price fields manually.

Index price displays

Major-index ticker displays are embedded TradingView widgets. They show the latest data available to TradingView for the selected symbols. Depending on exchange and data rights, a quote can be real-time, delayed or end-of-day.

Market data page

The Markets page uses embedded TradingView widgets rather than MoneyPilot-hosted market prices. TradingView provides the market data inside the widgets. Availability and timing vary by exchange and instrument and may be real-time, delayed or end-of-day.

Smart Avalanche Plan

The debt planner keeps the entered minimum payment on every active debt and directs all remaining monthly debt budget to the highest-APR balance. When a balance is paid off, its freed payment is rolled into the next-highest APR. The payment allocation and payoff simulation are deterministic calculator outputs. The optional AI Debt Coach only explains that computed plan and does not determine the payment amounts or priority order.

Other calculators

Debt assumes fixed APRs and a constant total monthly debt budget. Investment growth uses user-entered constant return, fee and inflation assumptions. Bitcoin tax fields are user-defined scenarios rather than individualized tax advice. RRSP-vs-TFSA and FHSA tools are simplified planning models.
